How does a MSD rev limiter work?
How does a MSD rev limiter work?
A rev limiter works by using a module or a switch on the ignition that will hold the RPM at a desired limit. It does this by monitoring the engine’s RPM and once it reaches the limit it will drop the sparks to different cylinders in order to hold the RPM at the given limit.
How do I reset my MSD rev limiter?
mcwho
- Ground the Gray tach output wire.
- Turn on power to the ignition without cranking the engine.
- Hold the Gray tach output wire to ground for seven seconds. (AT LEAST five seconds.)
- Release the wire from ground before ten seconds have passed.
- To confirm the process has worked, cycle the ignition power off and back on.
How does MSD 2 Step work?
Two-step works off of your speed sensor so it knows when you’re moving and when you’re not. When you’re not moving and the clutch is depressed, the motor will be able to rev and hold at a lower set value. This puts load on the engine and if you’re running a turbo setup will also build a few pounds of boost.
What is bouncing off the rev limiter?
The “bouncing” occurs because the limiter will cut off fuel or spark at the set RPM, which causes the RPM to drop. If the engine is in a state of open throttle when the RPM drops, the RPM will then raise back to the limit. This causes the engine to cycle its power on and off.
Does an MSD ignition add horsepower?
Well-Known Member. The only way you will see a 25HP gain in a motor is if your current spark is to weak and getting blown out at high RPM. This only happens on turbo motors running a lot of boost. Even then it’s not really a gain, it’s more like getting back what you lost.

Is Revving bad for engine?
When you rev your engine, you place additional and unnecessary stress on your car and its engine. This is imperative when it’s cold outside—revving your engine before it has had time to warm up is especially damaging, as the engine’s oil hasn’t had sufficient time to circulate and properly lubricate your car.
