What is a Penn 309 good for?
The Penn 309 used to be the standard for bay trolling. Most guys used 30 lb mono in spring / summer – then put on 30lb Monel for late fall / winter. It’s a good reel for spring – I’d stick with lighter lures – up to say 10 ozs. Not sure it will handle big umbrellas.
Are level wind reels good?
Some anglers find that a level wind is unnecessary when using braided line because it has a tendency to lay down on the spool pretty well on its own. Monofilament, on the other hand, requires a lot of attention to spool evenly; so if you prefer to use monofilament, you might consider a level wind reel instead.
Can you cast a lever drag reel?
If you can cast a star drag (correctly), you can cast a lever drag. Do some reels cast better than others? Absolutely. But if you learn the right way to do it, it’s the same.
How big a reel do I need?
If you are targeting smaller fish, a 500 to 1000 size reel would be best. If your reel is too big for your line size, you’ll have more line than you need and your casting distance will be impaired. You probably don’t need 400 yards of 6lb line for catching trout but we see it all the time in the shop.

The concept of a two-speed reel is really quite simple — instead of utilizing a single gear set designed to retrieve line at a given speed, a two-speed offers two, generally designated as “high” and “low,” which offer anglers more fishing options.
