In general, students must complete three to four years of pre-veterinary undergraduate coursework followed by four years of a professional program in a college of veterinary medicine.

The college was established in 1975 and began its professional education program in 1979. Approximately 40 residents of Oregon and 32 nonresident students are selected to enter the OSU Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine.
