We are Chicago’s NPR news station, one of the largest and most respected public media stations in the country. WBEZ was established as an extension service of the Chicago Board of Education in 1943. In 1970, we became one of the first charter member stations of National Public Radio.

Chicago Public Media announced it has laid off 12 employees and ended its production agreement with Sound Opinions due to financial pressures from the pandemic. The organization is facing a 20% revenue decline in the coming fiscal year, which begins July 1.
