The idea of going overseas for university study is an exciting prospect for many people. But while it may offer some advantages, it is probably better to stay home because of the difficulties a student inevitably encounters living and studying in a different culture. Do you agree or disagree?
It is true there has been conflicting ideas about this topic discussing the merits and demerits of studying abroad based on cultural, social, and linguistic differences among other issues but this essay begs to support the fact that going overseas for university study is an exciting prospect for many people because of the following reasons. First and foremost students get a chance to explore and get to learn different cultures and interact with people from different cultural backgrounds. The student gets an opportunity to tour various countries and learn.
According to (Lewin, 2010) studying overseas gives students exposes them to areas with fast hand rich knowledge base and real life experience to lessons taught theoretically. Difference in cultural background as well as different teaching and learning systems gives the student another perspective to life different from home. The student is able to appreciate different cultural issues such as learning a new language, eating new food as well as learning new customary issues among others (Lewin, 2010).
A study conducted by (Bataller, 2013) revealed that students who study overseas do not only get an opportunity to study a new language but has also an opportunity to practice it on daily basis. In addition, students gain attractive skills which they need to compete in the rather competitive job market and also necessary to impress their prospective employers. Students get a chance to meet, interact and make numerous friends across the globe and also acquire new skills which they could not acquire back home.
